ST. PETERSBURG - During the final rush toward the finish line, many in the Derby Lane crowd imagined they would see Cayman Went make history.
He didn't disappoint.
Unleashing his devastating kick, the fawn brindle male blew past the leader and into the record books.
By winning the T.L. Weaver Memorial Stakes, Cayman Went set a national record with his 11th stakes race title, breaking a 53-year-old mark held by Real Huntsman.
"We wanted the record, and we got it," said Francesca Field, co-owner of the greyhound. "We were waiting for (Cayman) to come out early, and his break was decent that we knew we had a chance to win."
Cayman Went won the five-sixteenths-mile race in 30.65 seconds out of the No. 7 box. Fuzzys Cannon (No. 2 box) was second, followed by Maryville Comet (No. 1) and Rhett A Tet Tet (No. 8). The 7-2-1 trifecta paid $15.40 and 7-2-1-8 paid $22.90.
