Cubs' Wood to miss up to 3 weeks

CHICAGO - Kerry Wood's right arm is structurally sound, a bone scan showed Monday, but the Cubs' ace still is expected to miss up to three weeks.

The test confirmed the original diagnosis of tendinitis in the lower triceps muscle. There was no evidence of a stress fracture.

Wood was put on the disabled list Thursday, retroactive to May 12, and hoped to be able to pitch Friday in Pittsburgh. But he was forced to cut a live batting practice session short Sunday after feeling more discomfort. He will rest for one week then resume his throwing regimen.

The Cubs said they expect him to be sidelined for 21/2-3 weeks, pushing his return back to early June.

Wood, 3-3 with a 2.82 ERA and 52 strikeouts, missed the 1999 season after elbow ligament replacement surgery, so the Cubs are being overly cautious with their prized pitcher. "We told Woody if he wasn't 100 percent at any time this week, that we'll kick back and shut it down," general manager Jim Hendry said Sunday.

AGENT: NOMAR LIKE TO STAY IN BOSTON: Nomar Garciaparra's agent thinks the shortstop will stay with the Red Sox after this season.

Arn Tellem spoke moments after chatting with team owner John Henry at Garciaparra's annual bowling fundraiser. Garciaparra can become a free agent after the season.

"He wants to stay here, and I personally would like to see him stay here," Tellem said. "You can see the outpouring."

Garciaparra is making $11.5-million in the final year of his contract. Last offseason, the Sox tried to obtain shortstop Alex Rodriguez from Texas for Manny Ramirez. The Red Sox then were expected to trade Garciaparra to open a spot for Rodriguez.

Garciaparra said he was hurt that he learned about that on television. It damaged relations between the team and Tellem.

"We apologized to each other several months ago for getting upset," Henry said.

DELGADO HURTS KNEE: Blue Jays first baseman Carlos Delgado left Monday's game after the third inning with a jammed right knee.

ANGELS: Jose Guillenis tired of being beaned, and he wants his teammates to do something about it. The former Devil Ray went on a profanity-laced tirade after a loss to Toronto. "I don't know how many times I've been hit and there's been no retaliation," said Guillen, hit six times this season. "I'm giving everything I got every day, playing hurt, playing in pain, and trying to win some games, and we don't get no help from nobody." Pitcher Jarrod Washburn seemed surprised Guillen would go public. "That's something between the hitters and the pitchers," Washburn said. "That's something we'll discuss."

BREWERS: Third baseman Wes Helms will miss 2-4 weeks after surgery on his strained right knee. Helms was hurt Wednesday when he slipped on a wet ramp at the park in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where Milwaukee was playing Montreal.

EXPOS: Leftfielder Carl Everett was given a warm ovation after he doubled in his first plate appearance in Montreal. The team activated outfielder Peter Bergeron from the DL and outrighted him to Triple A.

REDS: Barry Larkin committed his first error in the eighth. To that point, he was the only starting shortstop in the majors without an error.

YANKEES: Elvys Quezada pitched a no-hitter for Class A Battle Creek, beating the South Bend Silverhawks 7-0 in the Midwest League.
