Situated alongside the yacht basin and the approach to the Pier, the St. Petersburg Museum of History houses some spectacular views. Numerous scenes framed by windows in its new expansion drew admiring remarks Thursday evening from visitors who were there to celebrate the completion of the new space, which houses an archival reading room, a preservation lab and a learning center, plus much-needed storage.

Executive director Will Michaels said the new target date for reopening the original portion of the building is October. By then, all construction should be complete, and the museum will offer extended gallery space and a larger lobby and gift shop.

Attendees included George Campbell, Mary Wyatt Allen, Sally Poynter, Richard and Diane Winning, Malcolm King, Vera Espinola Beery, Harriett Strum, Tom and Betty Jean Miller, Mary Margaret Winning, Joyce Wilson, Anita Treiser and Paul Stavros.

Creative Clay presented its first Emmanuel award to restaurateur Emmanuel Roux on Thursday evening at an event it called a "Friendraiser," which was held in the Old Southeast home of Jim Howell and Bob Devin Jones.

Roux, of the Garden Restaurant, Redwoods, Integrity and the Lobby Bar, is indefatigable in his contributions of food and continental charm to numerous charities, artistic and otherwise.

Co-founder Grace-Anne Alfiero also recognized St. Petersburg cultural affairs manager Ann Wykell and state Rep. Frank Farkas, who have aided the continuation of Creative Clay, which links the developmentally disabled and the arts.

A few of the more than 100 guests were Robert Stackhouse and Carol Mickett, Bob and Marilyn Heitman, Mary and Harry Coyle, Jennifer Hardin and Christy Hallas.

They could not stop just anywhere for restroom breaks. Many roadside inns and restaurants were closed to them. Laws prohibited their owning property. They had separate water fountains and seating areas and schools.

Before the court cases that made up the now-famous Brown vs. Board of Education decision that made racial segregation of schools illegal in the United States, laws and customs cast severe restrictions on African-Americans in the United States.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling, the St. Petersburg Chapter of Links on Saturday sponsored a luncheon and tribute to bay area trailblazers in education at the Renaissance Vinoy.

Harvard University law professor Randall Kennedy was the keynote speaker. Pearl Brossard-Bryant and Yvonne Alsup co-chaired the event.

Apologies to Pinellas School Board member Mary Brown, whom I gave a different - and incorrect - surname recently.
