Library offers range of events for teens

SEMINOLE - The Seminole Community Library is hoping that weekly prize drawings will attract area teenagers to its Teen Summer program, June 7-July 16. To enter, teenagers pick a book to read and fill out a short form in the library's Teen Zone.

Special programs for teens also will be offered each Thursday:

June 10: Name That Tune contest.

June 17: Make and Take tie-dyed T-shirts and hemp jewelry. (Prior registration required.)

June 24: Free popcorn and soda during viewing of American Graffiti.

July 1: Musician's Showcase jam session for teens bringing their own instruments.

July 8: Free popcorn and soda during viewing of Footloose.

July 15: Learn to dance during the Dance Xpress. (Prior registration required.)

World War II veterans, their families and friends will receive special honors during a Memorial Day program, 10 a.m. Saturday at Garden Sanctuary Cemetery, 7950 131st St. The ceremony is co-sponsored by the Pinellas County Veterans Liaison Council and the city of Seminole. Retired Marine Corps Lt. Col. Fred Edwards is the guest speaker. Refreshments will be provided and carnations will be handed out in honor of the World War II veterans. Kathryn Davis, Seminole High girls' sports coach from 1969 to 1980, will be the guest of honor at a retirement party in July. Former players and friends are invited to attend. Davis at various times coached Seminole High School girls swimming, basketball, slow-pitch softball, cross-country and tennis. Her teams won conference, district and region titles and in 1979 her slow-pitch softball team won the state championship. The July 3 retirement party will be held at John Chesnut Sr. Park, 3990 Sandy Pointe Road, Palm Harbor, Shelter 9. When singing in the shower just isn't enough, area songbirds can join the Largo-Seminole Community Chorus for rousing Broadway tunes, inspirational songs and seasonal music. The chorus meets 7-9 p.m. Mondays at the Imperial Palms East Clubhouse, 101 Imperial Palms Drive, Largo. No audition is necessary. For more information, call 393-4843.
