TAMPA - A Pinellas County man faces federal fraud charges in a scam that solicited contributions on behalf of phony police groups, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Roger Frederick Corliss, 32, of Seminole was indicted Tuesday on 10 counts of mail fraud.
The indictment alleges that between August 1998 and February 2000, Corliss solicited contributions by mail for two phony organizations.
The mailings advertised that the contributions would be used to assist families of injured or killed police officers and for a legal defense fund for officers who are sued by criminals.
Corliss raised more than $113,000 and kept all but $350 for his own benefit, according to the indictment.
