Teacher to seek seat on Pinellas School Board

David Baylor, a teacher at Oak Grove Middle School, has announced his candidacy for the District 5 seat on the Pinellas School Board.

Baylor, 53, will face incumbent Carol Cook, who was elected in 2000.

"Teachers are being asked to do more with less every year," he said in a statement. "Unless you have been in the classroom the last three years, it is difficult to imagine the impact that budget cuts and policy changes involving student placement and accountability have had."

Baylor, who lives in unincorporated Clearwater, said in an interview he is more interested in making an impact on the board than in ousting Cook. The board spends too much time discussing minor issues, he said.

The primary election is Aug. 31, followed by the general election Nov. 2.
