BRANDON HOSPITAL AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS: Eight seniors from area high schools recently received scholarships from the medical staff at Brandon Hospital. The recipients of a $1,000 scholarship are:

Tara Ackerman, 18, East Bay High, attending Florida State University in the fall.

Mallorie Allen, 18, Bloomingdale High, attending Florida State University.

Angel Sustache Jr., 18, Brandon High, attending the University of South Florida.

Ryan Compton, 18, Durant High, attending Hillsborough Community College.

Teresa Danak, 18, Bloomingdale High, going to the University of South Florida.

Jessica Girard, 17, Armwood High, attending the University of Florida.

Jessica Herres, 17, Riverview High, attending the University of Florida.

William Smith, 17, King High, attending Georgia Institute of Technology.

Scholarships were awarded based on students' scholastic achievements during their high school years. * * *

PROMISING YOUNG WOMEN: Trisha Jo Phillips, 17, of Bloomingdale High School and Donna R. Simpson, 17, of Riverview High, were among 12 students recently honored as "Young Women of Promise" by the Athena Society. The teens were honored for their leadership and commitment to improving the world.

Phillips, a straight A student throughout her academic career, has been named Math Student of the Year two years in a row at Bloomingdale. She is a volunteer math tutor for a fifth-grader.

Simpson is an officer of the National Honor Society, a tutor with the Math Honor Society and has volunteered with several organizations, including the Special Olympics.

FULL SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED: The Tampa campus of Southwest Florida College recently recognized five outstanding high school seniors with full tuition scholarships; three hail from the Brandon area. Yuliya Lukyanets, 18, Bloomingdale High; Ariel Montes, 17, Riverview High; and Gustavo Zelaya, 18, East Bay High. Recipients were selected based on academic standing, recommendations and personal essays.
