"Can he cook? Can he cha-cha?" Those are the issues addressed in Cookin', an offbeat show in the 2004-05 Broadway season at Van Wezel Hall in Sarasota. It's a Korean stage concoction in which four performers mix up martial and culinary arts, percussion, comedy and dance to prepare a wedding banquet.
The 19 shows on the Van Wezel schedule include several new to the Tampa Bay area, such as Def Poetry Jam and the dance musical Contact. Also on the agenda is Bring in 'da Noise, Bring in 'da Funk, choreographed by Savion Glover and directed by George C. Wolfe. Jekyll & Hyde, the Frank Wildhorn musical, will be presented in a concert version. Irish step dancing will be featured in Lord of the Dance and Riverdance. Standards on the schedule include Les Miserables, Fiddler on the Roof and 42nd Street.
"Forbidden Broadway" will play Christmas week at the Players Theatre. Another production during the holidays is "Broadway on Ice" with Nancy Kerrigan, Rudy Galindo and Leslie Uggams. Evita, the Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice musical, has a new tour that will play Van Wezel on New Year's Eve.
