Blister will send Beckett to DL again

MIAMI - One star Marlins right-hander is headed to the disabled list. Another is coming back.

Josh Beckett will be placed on the 15-day disabled list today because of a blister on the middle finger of his pitching hand - a recurring problem that cut short his start against the Mets on Sunday and sent him to the disabled list three times in 2002.

Florida is activating A.J. Burnett (elbow surgery), who will make his return to the major leagues Thursday on the road against the Mets. Beckett's blister didn't dictate the Burnett decision, Marlins manager Jack McKeon said.

"It's tough losing Beckett, there's no question about that," McKeon said. "But, hopefully, you ease the pain by having this guy come back at this particular time."

The Marlins will recall another pitcher to replace Beckett.

ANGELS: Raul Mondesi went 0-for-2, popping out, drawing a walk and grounding out as the DH in his debut.

ASTROS: First baseman Jeff Bagwell hit the 427th homer of his career, moving him past Billy Williams into 33rd place on the all-time list. Frank Thomas is 32nd with 428 and Cal Ripken is 31st with 431.

ATHLETICS: Second baseman Mark McLemore (sore right knee) might have to go back on the DL.

BLUE JAYS: First baseman Carlos Delgado (strained right rib cage) did not play.

BRAVES: Leftfielder Chipper Jones (bruised left quad) is expected to start today.

BREWERS: Left-hander Chris Capuano (strained muscle) will miss his scheduled start today and be replaced by right-hander Matt Wise.

CUBS: Right-hander Mark Prior (Achilles' tendon) struck out 10 and allowed three hits and two runs in 51/3 innings while making a rehab start for Triple-A Iowa. Prior flew to Chicago immediately after the game and is scheduled to meet today with team president Andy MacPhail, general manager Jim Hendry, manager Dusty Baker and the training staff to determine his next step.

D'BACKS: Second baseman Matt Kata (separated left shoulder) was placed on the 15-day disabled list, and infielder Tim Olson was recalled from Triple-A Tucson.

DODGERS: Leftfielder Milton Bradley (sprained left ankle) was scratched after testing the ankle in batting practice.

EXPOS: Outfielder Carl Everett (sprained left ankle) was placed on the 15-day disabled list, and right-hander Tony Armas (strained side) was activated.

GIANTS: Leftfielder Barry Bonds got a day off.

METS: Left-hander Al Leiter (left shoulder tendinitis), who hasn't pitched since May 11, will start Tuesday.

ORIOLES: Outfielder Larry Bigbie was not in the starting lineup after stubbing his toe in his hotel room Saturday night, but he pinch ran.

PIRATES: Left-hander Mike Gonzalez was optioned to Triple-A Nashville.

RANGERS: Right-hander Kenny Rogers tied a team record with five wins in May.

RED SOX: Shortstop Nomar Garciaparra (Achilles' tendon) went 0-for-3 for Triple-A Pawtucket in the first game of his rehabilitation assignment. ... Curt Schilling passed Chuck Finley for 19th on the career strikeout list with 2,612.

ROCKIES: Outfielder Brad Hawpe was optioned to Triple-A Colorado Springs. Infielder Aaron Miles was recalled and will bat leadoff today.

TIGERS: Barring a setback in his last rehab start, DH Dmitri Young (broken leg) will be back in the lineup today.

TWINS: Catcher Joe Mauer (knee surgery) could rejoin the team this week.

YANKEES: First baseman Jason Giambi (sprained ankle) took batting practice and should be ready to be activated from the 15-day DL when eligible Sunday. ...
