Daily fishing report

The Spanish mackerel run has been exciting for area anglers. Mackerel up to 6 pounds were caught as far north as the Gandy Bridge. They will make strong runs. They are fun to catch and delicious.

When mackerel fishing, have the drag set lightly. Many are lost if the drag is too tight. It is fairly common to have macks foul-hooked. Fighting the fish too hard will pull the hook. Hooks that have a long shank will help combat razor-sharp teeth.

On a recent mackerel trip, we witnessed a very large kingfish skyrocket right off of the stern. It almost came out of the water with the chum bag in its mouth. At first glance, because of the size, we immediately thought tarpon. As it was flying by, we then realized what it was. The hang time was almost in slow motion. We actually saw it biting in the air. The sight was incredible especially if you consider where we were, 1 mile east of the Pier.

Snook still are active on the flats. High tides this week should allow for excellent opportunities to fish the shallows. Snook will hold tight to the mangroves during the middle of the day. They can be coaxed out with soft plastic jerk baits or live shrimp or greenbacks.

Snook are out of season now, so they must be released. Try to lip the fish instead of netting them. Landing nets remove the slime layer, and they make the fish more susceptible to disease and infection.
