Animal shelters overflow with cats for adoption

LARGO - It's kitten season, and the SPCA of Pinellas County is running out of room at the inn.

More than 70 cats are seeking new homes. Many of these felines are older, with their ages ranging from 3 to 11 years.

The SPCA is reducing adoption fees for adult cats from $35 to $25 during June. The fee includes spaying or neutering, vaccinations, microchip and license tags. It will still cost $35 to adopt a kitten.

Adopting an adult cat has its advantages. They are mature companions, typically litter-trained and less likely to get into trouble. "We're looking for people to make a lifetime commitment," said Nora Hawkins, SPCA marketing director.

Those who adopt a cat can attend the shelter's cat talk behavior class on June 24 at no charge.

Visitors can see adoptable pets at the shelter, 9099 130th Avenue N, which is open Tuesday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday noon to 8 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. Visit www.spcaofpinellas.org or call 727 586-3591.

Also in June, Pinellas County Animal Services is reducing its $30 charge for a vaccinated spayed or neutered cat or dog to $15.

To find an adoptable dog or cat from Animal Services, visit the shelter at 12450 Ulmerton Road, Largo, or go to www.pinellascounty.org and look for find/adopt a pet. The shelter is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The adoption section closes half an hour before regular closing time. Call 582-2600.
