When the knife and cutting board are too much trouble, we turn to kitchen shears to get the job done.

These Oxo Good Grips shears, which can be used by lefties and righties, are $12. Prices climb as high as $50 for models from Henckels and Wusthof, which also have less expensive versions. Wash shears well after each use, preferably in the dishwasher where the water is hot, hot, hot. And make sure the rest of the family knows to keep their mitts off them.

We use them for:

* Snipping herbs

* Trimming chicken

* Cutting pizza

* Chopping canned whole tomatoes

* Trimming artichokes

* Edging pie crusts

* Opening bags of salad greens

* Cutting scallions

* Making little clumps of grapes

* Trimming flowers
