Leaders seek gated Mobbly Bayou

OLDSMAR - Whatever the cost, City Council members say they want a gate to stop unwelcome traffic from entering the Mobbly Bayou beach at the south end of Shore Drive.

Earlier this year, city officials had proposed installing a gate to keep visitors off the beach after dark. But Progress Energy representatives worried the gate would impede employees entering the power station at the south of the beach, Parks and Recreation director Lynn Rives said. As a compromise Tuesday night, council members said the city should purchase a gate with remote entry, even though it would be more costly than a key-operated gate. City Manager Bruce Haddock said the city would make a new proposal to Progress Energy. "We're asking for a whole lot of trouble down there if you don't have a gate," Mayor Jerry Beverland said.
