DETROIT - Dave Lewis will return to coach the Red Wings. Lewis, whose contract expired when the Flames eliminated Detroit in the second round, met with general manager Ken Holland Thursday.

Lewis, a former Red Wings assistant and player, became coach after Scotty Bowman retired the night Detroit won its 10th Stanley Cup two years ago.

Lewis led Detroit to a 96-41-21-6 record in two seasons, but he won only one playoff series with a postseason mark of 6-10.

The Red Wings earned 110 points last season and 109 this season.

CANADIENS: Forward Steve Begin had surgery to repair his damaged left shoulder Wednesday, according to the Montreal Gazette. The Canadiens expect him to be ready for training camp in September.

FLYERS: Goaltender Sean Burke is scheduled for surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left hip Tuesday, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. It's the same procedure that Robert Esche had this week.

MAPLE LEAFS: Forward Darcy Tucker had abdominal surgery. Tucker, a former Lightning wing, missed 14 games with the injury. Tucker had 21 goals and 11 assists in 64 games.

PREDATORS: Goaltender Chris Mason was re-signed. Mason was 4-4-1 with a .926 save percentage this season.
