ST. PETERSBURG - Sixteen buildings were honored by St. Petersburg Preservation Inc. recently with its 2004 preservation awards.
SPPI also named Jim Brennan, its president, as preservationist of the year. Its annual education award went to the Pinellas Genealogy Society. The St. Petersburg Lawn Bowling Club received the Jon & Hilary Clarke Award, given for grass roots organizing.
The group presents the awards every other year in four categories, honoring buildings more than 50 years old and new construction that meshes with old structures.
The four main categories are restoration/rehabilitation, adaptive reuse, compatible design and preservation/maintenance.
According to the group's literature, "restored" refers to buildings that have been renovated to something close to their original appearance and function.
"Rehabilitated" describes a less sweeping overhaul in a building that retains its historic style.
"Adaptive reuse" refers to a historic building that has changed its function.
"Compatible design" recognizes new construction designed to blend in with surrounding, historic buildings.
"Preservation/maintenance" honors historic structures that have not changed their function or required rehabilitation.
