13 freight train cars derail; no injuries

SUMMERFIELD - Nearly half of a 28-car CSX freight train derailed Friday night in central Florida, blocking both lanes of traffic on Marion County Road 42, officials said.

No one was injured and it was not clear why the train, bound from Jacksonville to Tampa, derailed.

A car carrying phosphorous acid remained on the track. Most of the other cars contained dry goods, mail and liquor.

The crew reported feeling an unusual tugging at the rear of the train just before the 13 cars derailed. It was traveling about 50 mph, said Heather Danenhower with Marion County Fire-Rescue.

The westbound lanes of County Road 42 were closed just off the intersection of U.S. 301. Eastbound traffic was also blocked from SE 73rd Avenue to the tracks.

CSX investigators were on the scene.

Summerfield is 51 miles northwest of Orlando.
