As the wife of former Clearwater Mayor Gabe Cazares, she was actively involved in many social and political causes.
Velma R. Cazares, a political activist and wife of former Clearwater Mayor Gabriel "Gabe" Cazares, died of cancer Saturday (May 29, 2004) at Mease Continuing Care, Dunedin. She was 70.
Mrs. Cazares, who came to the area in 1970 from Owenton, Ky., was active in the Democratic Party for decades in both Kentucky and Pinellas County.
She was a member of both the Pinellas Democratic Club and North Pinellas Democratic Club and received an award from the Pinellas County Democratic Executive Committee for her political work and contributions to the community several months ago.
Mrs. Cazares was a member of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security, National Farm Workers Ministry and Pinellas Support Committee of the National Farm Worker ministry. For years, Mr. and Mrs. Cazares made trips to deliver toys and clothes to the Farmworkers Self-Help organization in Dade City.
Other survivors include a daughter, Maxine Osborn, Holiday; two brothers, Allen Ray Webster, Covington, Ky., and Robert Gilmore, West Virginia; two grandchildren, Josh and Jason Osborn, both of Holiday; and a niece, Linda Chapman Caldwell, Warsaw, Ky., and Pinellas Park.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Moss-Feaster Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, Serenity Gardens Chapel, 13401 Indian Rocks Road, Largo.
