Elected officials host town meeting on crime

ST. PETERSBURG - Hoping to glean ideas for fighting crime, City Council member Earnest Williams has organized a town meeting 10 a.m. Saturday at the Wildwood Recreation Center.

Residents are encouraged to come chat with a group of elected officials that will include Williams, council colleagues Jamie Bennett and Rene Flowers, county commissioners Kenneth Welch and Calvin Harris and School Board member Mary Brown.

"You don't have to be a silent bystander," Williams said.

The recreation center is at 1000 28th St. S.

The May 12 disorder along 18th Avenue S and a few other scattered sites in and near Midtown prompted the meeting, Williams said. The unrest came during a civil trial that was connected to the 1996 disturbances.

Williams said some city administrators might come, but that the meeting was primarily focused on talking with elected leaders.
