MLB penalizes Cedeno, Reed

NEW YORK - St. Louis outfielder Roger Cedeno was suspended for four games and Colorado reliever Steve Reed was suspended for three for their animated run-ins with umpires.

Both players appealed Friday, meaning their penalties will not take effect until hearings are held. Cedeno and Reed also were fined undisclosed amounts by the league.

The suspensions had been set to start Friday night. Cedeno was not in the starting lineup as the Cardinals played at Texas, and Reed was available as the Rockies visited Tampa Bay.

Cedeno was suspended after spraying an umpire with spit Tuesday. Reed was penalized after throwing his glove at an ump Sunday.

Cedeno was ejected after breaking his bat on home plate after a check-swing strike against the Chicago Cubs. Plate umpire Rick Reed said Cedeno then spit on him.

Asked if he thought it was intentional, Reed said, "Yes. ... He was pretty profane. His obscenities were pretty personal."

Umpire Bruce Dreckman tossed Steve Reed during a game between the Rockies and San Francisco. A.J. Pierzynski leaned his right elbow into Reed's pitch with the bases loaded, giving the Giants a 10-2 lead. Reed argued that Pierzynski didn't try to get out of the way. Manager Clint Hurdle ran out to argue and had to shove hard to restrain Reed, who bumped Dreckman and was ejected. Reed stayed on the field, and Colorado teammates helped Hurdle keep the pitcher separated from Dreckman.

ANGELS: Right-hander Aaron Sele was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of fatigue in his right shoulder, the one that required surgery two years ago. Infielder-outfielder Robb Quinlan was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake to replace Sele on the roster.

CARDINALS: Slugger Albert Pujols returned to the lineup as the designated hitter against the Rangers after missing four games with a strained left hamstring. Pujols injured his leg running the bases in the sixth inning of a 3-2 loss Sunday to Houston. ... Right-hander Jason Simontacchi was recalled and right-hander Dan Haren was optioned to Triple-A Memphis. Haren gave up 10 runs in 32/3 innings in an emergency start Thursday against the Cubs.

EXPOS: Right-hander Tomo Ohka was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a broken forearm, and left-hander Joe Morgan was called up from Triple-A Edmonton. Ohka was hit by a line drive off Carlos Beltran's bat Thursday at Kansas City. He could be out for as long as three months with the broken bone in his pitching arm.

GIANTS: Right-hander Brett Tomko was placed on the 15-day disabled list with an elbow injury. Left-hander Noah Lowry was recalled from Triple-A Fresno.

INDIANS: Catcher Victor Martinez will miss at least a few games after spraining his right foot, and the team purchased the contract of Sandy Martinez from Triple-A Buffalo to back up Tim Laker while the other Martinez is out.

RED SOX: Scott Williamson was activated from the 15-day disabled list, and catcher Andy Dominique was sent to Triple-A Pawtucket.

ROYALS: General manager Allard Baird, on the heels of a doubleheader loss to Montreal, said he is ready to begin dismantling his team to build for 2005. "This is a change," Baird said. Specifically, it means he is ready to take offers for Carlos Beltran, his switch-hitting centerfielder who is one of six players with at least three seasons of 100 runs, 100 RBIs and 30 stolen bases. Beltran, 26, will be eligible for free agency after this season, and the Royals are determined to get as much for him as they can.

TWINS: Shortstop Trevor Plouffe of Crespi High School in California, one of the team's three first-round draft picks, signed.

YANKEES: Pitcher Mike Mussina left his start against the Padres after three innings because of tightness in his right groin. His departure was a precaution, the team said. His injury occurred two days after teammate Kevin Brown strained his back. Tests on Brown's back showed no major damage, and he might not even miss a start.
