Ten things to know about the babies of the baby boom. These are the 27-million people born 40 years ago, in 1964. That year is regarded as the end of the baby boom, which started in 1946. As they turn 40, here's what these youngest boomers want as they ponder retirement.

* They want to live in smaller communities near cultural venues and shopping.

* They want a more urban, entertainment-oriented environment, not the suburban or resort-style setting focused on activities such as golf.

* Twenty percent plan to retire between the ages of 51 and 55.

* More than half say "looking young" is important to them.

* They want to live near their current homes. More than 60 percent want to stay within a one-hour drive of their present residence. They don't want to retire far away.

* They want active-adult communities with high-tech features such as high-speed Internet connections. They want communities with social activities and high security.

* One-third own two homes or would consider owning two homes.

* Priorities in retirement will be to relax, travel and get healthy.

* Fifteen percent predict their marriages will improve after they quit their main careers.

* They define "middle age" as some time after 50. More than one-third say "old age" begins as early as 66.
