One big inning was all Palm Harbor American needed to defeat Largo 10-3 on Friday to capture the District 12 major baseball Tournament of Champions at West Pasco.
With his team trailing 2-0 in the fourth, Casey Turgeon's three-run homer gave Palm Harbor a 3-2 lead and ignited a 10-run inning. Ben Sweat, Trevor Schmidt and Joe See all had run-scoring hits as PHA won its third major title in four years.
"We couldn't score," PHA coach John Petika said. "It was pretty frustrating. But we really did play good defense and that's what wins games."
In District 5, Northeast advanced with an 8-4 win over Pinellas Park National. Home runs by Northeast's J.J. Knapp and Robby Esposito supported starter Bobby Punzack, who went the distance for the win. Northeast plays Southwest today at 10 a.m. for the title at Northwest.
SENIOR B SOFTBALL: Baypoint advanced to the District 5 title game, beating Gulfport 16-9. Morgan Hackman and Melody Greene led a 17-hit attack with four apiece. Baypoint faces Seminole today at 10 a.m.
SENIOR A SOFTBAL: Allison Shirley went the distance as Cross Bayou defeated Seminole 7-3 to claim the District 5 title.
On Thursday, Cross Bayou overcame an early 10-run deficit to force a deciding game with a 11-10 over Seminole.
