BRANDON - Two people died Saturday after the car they were in struck a guardrail along Interstate 75, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Virginia Edgin, 77, whose last known address was Antioch, Tenn., was southbound on I-75 when the 2004 Buick sedan she was driving swerved to the shoulder and struck a guardrail. The guardrail went through the car and out the rear window, killing Edgin and her passenger, 16-year-old Wesley Edgin.

FHP Lt. Bruce Doras said it's likely Edgin fell asleep, but "there was no way to know for sure."

Doras said he did not know how Virginia and Wesley Edgin were related and why they were in the bay area.
