Defending U.S. Open champion Jim Furyk made a surprise appearance at Shinnecock Hills on Monday and said he will try to play. Furyk has not played since January when pain in his wrist caused him to take time off. He had surgery March 22 and said at the time he expected to be out three to six months. He all but ruled out defending his Open title.
But Furyk, who won last year's tournament at Olympia Fields outside of Chicago, played his first full round last week in Ponte Vedra Beach. And he decided to give it a try.
"I'm not fooling myself," he said. "I haven't played tournament golf in six months. I'll be grinding it out."
PROBLEMS FOR PRESSEL?: Morgan Pressel might not be going back to the U.S. Women's Open. Pressel, who made the cut last year as a 15-year-old, had a quintuple bogey in a qualifier in Heathrow.
Rain delayed the completion of the 36-hole sectional qualifier. The top five players advance to the Open beginning July 1 at The Orchards Club in South Hadley, Mass. Pressel, the precocious teen with a blonde ponytail who became the youngest qualifier in the history of the Open in 2001, was 7 over with one hole remaining. She probably needs to make a birdie and get some help. Pressel also would like a do-over at the par-4 No. 17, where she put two in the water and carded an 8.
"Take away that hole and I'm, like, easy in," Pressel said.
Bernadette Luse, who plays on the Futures Tour, is the leader at 2-over 146. In-Bee Park led after the first round at 72.
