Shuman returning to Boca Ciega job

Randy Shuman, who resigned last year because of family and scheduling issues, is returning as head coach of the Boca Ciega boys basketball team.

Bob Medici, who coached the Pirates to a 15-9 record last year, has resigned to focus on his duties as athletic coordinator at the school. He will also resume as junior varsity coach, as he did under Shuman's previous tenure.

Shuman said Medici didn't want to coach the varsity team another season, sparking his interest in returning.

"Bob told me last week he had decided not to do it anymore," Shuman said. "Bob's been real active at the school with all athletics and thinks he really, really enjoys that and didn't think he could continue. He really wanted to go that route rather than go with the coaching. He wants it to go back like the old days."

Many of the reasons Shuman resigned centered on day care issues for his two young children, the schedule at school and a touch of burnout.

Shuman said he "played Mr. Mom" for a year, and applied for some college jobs he didn't get because he doesn't have a master's degree. He said he will work toward that too for a year or two.

In his first 14 years as Bogie's coach, Shuman was 307-104 overall for a .747 winning percentage, and won the 1993-94 Class 4A state championship.
