Did you know 1970s and '80s phenoms Daryl Hall and John Oates are the most successful selling duo in musical history? It's true.
Now Hall & Oates, the guys behind Kiss on My List, I Can't Go for That (No Can Do), Private Eyes and Man Eater have teamed up with five-time Grammy winner and former head Doobie Brother Michael McDonald, whose hits include It Keeps You Runnin' and Takin' It to the Streets, to co-headline the Rock & Soul 2004 Review tour, which kicks off Wednesday in Tampa at the USF Sun Dome.
The funky Average White Band opens the three-hour shows with favorites Cut the Cake and School Boy Crush.
Not that the entire show will be a nostalgia-thon.
Hall & Oates last year released their 21st album, Do It for Love, while McDonald treated fans to Motown, a collection of updated soul classics that featured his current hit Ain't No Mountain High Enough. (The song also was featured in ads McDonald did for MCI.)
The Rock & Soul 2004 Review featuring Daryl Hall & John Oates, Michael McDonald and the Average White Band begins at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the USF Sun Dome, 4202 E Fowler Ave., Tampa. $29.75-$49.75. (813) 287-8844 or (727) 898-2100 or (813) 974-3002.
Supersuckers kick up some excitement
The garage cowpunk band the Supersuckers formed in 1988 in Tucson, Ariz., where the members went to high school together.
Since then, Supersuckers, fronted by the outrageous Eddie Spaghetti, have been donning cowboy hats and releasing feisty records about sex, drugs and Satan.
The band's fans are a cultish lot and include country bad boy Steve Earle, who waxes rhapsodic about the Supersuckers on its official Web site.
The live shows? Whoo-ee. The live shows have got some pep, yes sir, they do. These guys pack the kind of riffs you get when you've spent your adolescence in your bedroom with Motorhead records and various paraphernalia you don't want your parents to find. Buy the band a beer and request some of the classics: Santa Rita High (an ode to their alma mater), Coattail Rider and Creepy Jacakalope Eye.
The Supersuckers perform at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the State Theatre, 687 Central Ave., St. Petersburg. $10 advance, $12 day of show. (727) 895-3045.
