Published June 18, 2004

SAN DIEGO - Fred McGriff took another step closer to history Thursday night by hitting his 493rd home run, tying Lou Gehrig for 21st place on the all-time list.

McGriff hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning of the Devil Rays-Padres game, knocking a 1-and-0 pitch from Adam Eaton into the porch seating area that juts into the rightfield corner at Petco Park.

McGriff has now homered in 43 major-league stadiums, extending his own record.
