Powerboats return to Tampa Bay this weekend with the Offshore Super Series Powerboat Racing Association, a different group from the one that brought powerboats here last fall.

Vinoy Park, Vinoy Basin and the Pier in downtown St. Petersburg are the hub for the events, which include a race village open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. The boats are in the wet pit area of the basin from noon to 6 p.m. today, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Other highlights Saturday and Sunday include a car and motorcycle show, starting at 10 a.m., and children's activities, with a huge inflatable water slide.

Qualifying races, which can be seen from the Pier and other waterfront areas, are from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, followed by the Powerboats on the Pier party from 7 to 11 p.m.

Opening ceremonies for the Super Series race begin at noon Sunday, with racing from 1 to 5 p.m. Views from some parts of the Pier and waterfront areas are free; VIP tickets are $100 per day or $175 for Saturday and Sunday. Admission to the race village/pit area is $5 per day or $10 for a three-day pass. 727 896-7223 or www.stpetersburgoss.org
