Wesley Chapel's first choice for its next baseball coach has turned it down, opting for a more lucrative offer from Broward County.

David Vince, coach at Lake Howell High in Winter Park for the past seven years, was offered the Wesley Chapel job last week but called the school Wednesday to let it know he was instead accepting a job at Coconut Creek.

Vince, 44, has amassed more than 400 wins in college and high school baseball. He had all but accepted Wesley Chapel's offer last week and was driving to look at houses when Coconut Creek called. It offered to increase his pay by $5,000 if he would take on in-school suspension supervision during his planning period.

"I had pretty much made up my mind, and I'm halfway there to look at houses," Vince said. "But with what they offered, the difference in pay was about $20,000." The Wildcats are working to replace the only baseball coach in the school's five-year existence, Steve Mumaw, who resigned to spend more time with his family. Wesley Chapel went 30-105 under Mumaw. This past season, it reached the district semifinals and finished 9-15. Wesley Chapel principal Andy Frelick is on vacation this week but is scheduled to return Monday. Assistant principal Rick Mellin said Thursday the job might be reposted because several interested parties, including former major-league catcher Mike Figga, had only called the school and cannot be considered until they formally apply through the school district.
