Burn forward becomes MLS career goals leader

DALLAS - Jason Kreis became the career goals leader in MLS history, scoring in the 37th minute in the Burn's 1-1 tie with D.C. United on Saturday. Alecko Eskandarian had a goal in the 58th minute to help United salvage the tie on a soggy Cotton Bowl field. Kreis' 89th career goal broke the record held by former Tampa Bay Mutiny player Roy Lassiter. "I felt like the moon and stars lined up, it was a home game and I felt the conditions were great," Kreis said. MORE MLS: A rare Columbus Crew own goal and a score by Rapids forward Jean Philippe Peguero gave Colorado the 2-1 road victory. ... Felix Brillant and Clint Dempsey scored early in the second half to lead the host New England Revolution to a 2-1 win over the MetroStars.

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS: The Netherlands reached the semifinals, defeating Sweden 5-4 on penalty kicks. The quarterfinal was a scoreless tie after regulation and overtime. It was the first time in five attempts the Dutch won a penalty-kick shootout at a major championship.

BOXING: Harding takes beating

Tonya Harding's new career as a boxer took a severe beating, along with her face, as she was knocked out by Amy Johnson. Fans booed the disgraced figure skater when she entered the ring and leapt to their feet cheering as she was pummeled by the 22-year-old Johnson. The fight was stopped at 1:04 of the third round.

NFL: Texans sign top pick

Houston signed first-round pick Jason Babin, a converted linebacker from Western Michigan who is being counted on to strengthen the team's weak pass rush. Babin is the first first-round pick to agree to terms.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Alabama men's coach Mark Gottfried, a Crestline, Ohio, native, declined to say if he has been contacted by Ohio State officials about that school's coaching vacancy.

HORSES: Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas' Stellar Jayne won the $200,000 Mother Goose Stakes as a 29-1 shot at Belmont Park.

BOAT RACING: Champion hydroplane driver Bill Sterret Jr. died after an accident on the Ohio River near downtown Owensboro, Ky. He was 57. His father, Bill Sterett Sr.retired from racing in 1969 after capturing three world championships and a world speed record.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: James Walley, who lost his job last season as starting running back for Southern Miss, has left the team.

SAILING: Spanish King Juan Carlos led his yacht to victory over the United States in the Sardinia Cup's first offshore team world championships.

TRACK: Christine Arron of France won the 100- and 200 meters at Lille's international meet. Yulia Pechonkina of Russia won the 400-meter hurdles in 53.9. The world-record holder overtook Tatiana Tereschuk of Ukraine.
