TARPON SPRINGS - What a way to start the week: a natural gas leak badly snarled Monday morning rush hour traffic at U.S. 19 and Klosterman Road, according to Tarpon Springs Fire Rescue.
Officials got a call shortly after 8 a.m. that a piece of heavy construction equipment working on the widening of Klosterman Road cut a 2-inch natural gas line, fire Lt. Rick Letz said. The equipment operator told firefighters that the gas line wasn't marked, Letz said.
Within minutes, firefighters had cleared out the Amoco gasoline station at the northwest corner of the intersection and closed Klosterman, all three southbound lanes of U.S. 19 and at least one northbound lane of U.S. 19. No one was hurt and there was no fire. Clearwater Gas arrived to seal the leak, and roads were reopened to traffic at 8:40 a.m. "In cases like that we try to get the streets open as soon as possible," Letz said. "I know traffic was backed up pretty bad."
