There's no accounting for the weather. Most of District 6, especially the major (11- and 12-year-old) softball division, found that out the hard way Monday when Northside and Interbay made it to the second inning before their elimination game was canceled by rain.
As a result, two fields will be used today at Northwest Little League. The winner of that contest will play the winner of Citrus Park vs. Keystone, a game also scheduled Monday.
The boys ran into a similar problem at Northside Little League, though they played a bit more. In the major division, Citrus Park and Bayshore played into the fifth inning before rain ended play. The teams waited more than an hour before the game was suspended.
Play will resume today with the score tied at 5.
Rain on Sunday forced Tampa Bay and the Yellow Jackets to end their game Monday. Tampa Bay remained undefeated thanks to a 16-3 victory, shortened by the 10-run mercy rule, and will play Northwest in Bracket A, with the winner moving on to the final.
Following the one inning to complete that game, the Yellow Jackets then got in two innings against Skyway in an elimination game before lightning halted the game.
Neither the Interbay-West Tampa nor the Northside-Palma Ceia games started. Both elimination games in the major division will be made up today.
The junior softball tournament is scheduled to start today. Just four teams are in the field, and one will be eliminated by the end of the night.
At 6 p.m., Northside plays Palma Ceia, and Citrus Park meets Skyway in the other contest. The winners meet at 8 and the losers play at the same time for the right to stay in the tournament.
