Water leak damages roadway

ST. PETERSBURG - Part of the intersection at Massachusetts Avenue and Venetian Boulevard NE in Shore Acres will be closed for the next few days as crews repair damages from a Tuesday morning water main leak.

The city received a call Tuesday morning from a resident who reported water flowing down the street. A team responded to the scene at about 6:30 a.m., and crews had the pipe repaired by 10:30 a.m.

The intersection was closed Tuesday morning while city workers repaired the pipe. Early evaluations suggested the break happened because of "fatigue issues," said Joseph Towry, assistant director for water resources.

"These things happen from time to time," Towry said. "There should be some flooding on the road, but that should drain off pretty quickly."

Water damage to the road will be repaired within the next three days, said John Riera, acting manager of water distribution systems. The northeast corner of the intersection will be closed during the process, but the rest of the intersection will be open to traffic, Riera said.

The break did not contaminate residents' water, as crews did not have to depressurize the main to fix the problem.
