Taste test column debuts

By JANET K. KEELER
Published June 30, 2004

Ever stand in front of the wall of yogurts trying to figure out which brand to buy?

Likewise, spaghetti sauces, decaffeinated coffees, vinaigrettes, barbecue sauces, frozen macaroni-and-cheese kits, vanilla ice creams, soy milks and microwaveable popcorn?

Today, we debut Taster's Choice, a regular feature in the Taste section aimed at making grocery shopping a little easier. Just in time for the Fourth of July, our tasters tackle beef hot dogs.

Our panel includes two consumers and avid cooks, a personal chef and mother of four, and a registered dietitian from the Pinellas County Cooperative Extension Service. In upcoming columns, the panel will sample such foods as salsas, green tea, frozen garlic bread and oatmeal raisin cookies. Times correspondent Kathy Saunders will coordinate the tastings.

All items are tasted blind, which means the panel doesn't know what brands they are sampling.

We welcome suggestions for products to be tasted. See the bottom of today's column for instructions on how to submit them.
