Hyde Park complex hosts First Friday Happy Hour

HISTORIC HYDE PARK - Shop, stroll and enjoy First Friday Happy Hour in Old Hyde Park Village, at Swann and Dakota avenues, today from 5 to 7 p.m. O Som Do jazz band provides live entertainment in the main fountain area.

Authors to hold signings at Inkwood Books

OSCAWANA - Inkwood Books, 216 S Armenia Ave., will host two author appearances this week. Award-winning consumer reporter Elisabeth Leamy, formerly with WFLA-TV and currently at WTTG-TV in Washington, D.C., will discuss and sign The Savvy Consumer: How to Avoid Scams and Ripoffs That Cost You Time and Money today at 6 p.m.

On Wednesday, at 6 p.m., St. Petersburg Times feature writer Jeff Klinkenberg will read and sign Seasons of Real Florida, his collection of essays on characters, heroes and modern rogues off Florida's beaten path.

Also at Inkwood Books through Wednesday, all of July's Book Sense independent booksellers recommendations will be 20 percent off during Independents Week. For more information, call 253-2638.

Metropolitan Ministries seeks baby care items

TAMPA HEIGHTS - Metropolitan Ministries, 2101 N Florida Ave., needs baby care items to help homeless families. Items most requested are: diapers (sizes large and extra large); Pull-Ups (sizes 4T and 5T); pain reliever/fever reducer for infants and children; baby wipes; Tussin DM cough suppressant; and Claritin for children (all unopened and sealed items only).

Donations can be dropped off at the Ministries Donation Center Mondays from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Tuesday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Studio 1515 to host poetry reading

HISTORIC YBOR - Studio 1515, 1515 E Seventh Ave., will host Diana Browning as she presents "Poetry on the Edge: Summer Slam-O-Rama" on Saturday at 8:45 p.m. All poets must keep their words to seven minutes or less and no music or props, please.

Judges will be randomly selected from the audience. Cost is $2 at the door, and three guests will win cash prizes. For information, call 286-7753.
