  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Tampa: Shoppers, diners asked to break free of chains

In honor of Independence Day, 70 small-business owners are teaming up for "Independent Week" to encourage shoppers to patronize their stores and restaurants.

Members of the Tampa Independent Business Alliance will hold in-store promotions through Wednesday. One lucky shopper will get $2,000 in gift certificates and merchandise through a drawing. To enter, pick up a "game board" from any member and receive a sticker from each participating business you visit. Once you have seven stickers, the game board is entered in the drawing.

Look for specials at businesses such as Sherri's Yesterdaze and Viva la Frida Restaurant in Seminole Heights, Serendipity Accents and Gifts on Davis Islands, and Georgette's in Old Hyde Park Village.

A full list of TIBA members can be found at www.tibatampa.org "We believe this celebration fits in with the new citywide campaign, "I am Tampa,' " said Maryann Ferenc, a TIBA board member. "We have a reason to celebrate. These friends and neighbors embody the spirit of entrepreneurism and individuality in our community."
