Published July 6, 2004

INVERNESS - Lonnie Thomas Arnold's trial will not begin today. Previously scheduled for this week, the trial was postponed last week at the request of both the state and the defense. Arnold was with Commission Chairman Josh Wooten's wife in Floral City when he was arrested Dec. 7 on charges of possessing methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. Kimberly Wooten was not arrested but has been listed as a witness. No new trial date has been set.

Veterans coalition helps classrooms obtain flags

INVERNESS - The Citrus County Veterans Coalition is helping Citrus schools meet the requirements of a new law that says all classrooms must have an American flag. Anyone interested in making a donation to the coalition's Veterans Establishing Teacher Support, or VETS, campaign can call treasurer Michael Gudis at 564-0246, chairman Chris Gregoriou at 795-7000 or Kenneth Heisner at 563-058. State Rep. Charles Dean announced the initiative recently at a School Board meeting. Local businesses and veterans organizations already have volunteered their efforts in soliciting funds. The estimated cost to accomplish this task is $10,000. State Sen. Mike Fasano and state Rep. Bev Kilmer sponsored the measure, which passed in the 2004 legislative session and was signed by Gov. Jeb Bush. The directive also outlined requirements for the flags and granted a one-year period for schools to obtain the flag donations.
