St. Petersburg Times: Beyond the spotlight | A daily look

Edwin and Jannette Marquez live in East Boston, the working class neighborhood just across the harbor from FleetCenter, where the Democratic National Convention begins today. "We’re just trying to have a wedding here," says Edwin. "We don’t deal with politics." The Puerto Rican native says he won't vote in this year's election or watch the convention on TV. "Maybe (the election) could change my life, but in my neighborhood, there are more important things to worry about." In 1988, Vice President George Bush called the sludge-filled waters a “harbor of shame." He accused the Democratic nominee, Gov. Michael Dukakis, of stalling the cleanup. But on Sunday as Lemuel Marquez, 16, and his brother Xavier, 9, right, waited to join their new family for a portrait, the harbor was shining as a sign of the city’s progress. Marquez acknowledges that its beauty has improved his neighborhood, but holds steadfast to the idea that his involvement in politics will not make a difference.
