| War's final chapter was on display Tuesday in central Boston in a traveling memorial called Eyes Wide Open: 907 pairs of military boots, a pair for every serviceman killed in Iraq, each tagged with a soldiers name, rank, age and home state: Lt. Doyle M. Hufstedler, 25, Tx; Sgt. 1st Class Paul Ray Smith, 33, Fl; Pvt. 1st. Class Michael A Mora, 19, Ca.... "We can't continue to switch the TV channel and watch The Simpsons," said Elaine Turley of New York, visibly shaken as she left the memorial. "We like to close our eyes but we need to be reminded that each of us as Americans are responsible for our government's policy and we need to be reminded of the consequences of that policy." On a paper sign, the number of dead is updated daily. As the number climbs, the American Friends Service Committee, a Quaker organization, glues the new total over the old. They have more boots waiting, ready for death to come, and the numbers already printed for 908-920. |
