St. Petersburg Times: Beyond the spotlight | A daily look

The official "Free Speech" zone at the Democratic National Convention is wedged between a parking lot and a bunch of trailers, beneath the steel supports of a condemned stretch of Boston's mass transit line, the T. Ringed with fences, some rimmed with concertina wire, it's as close as protesters can get to the convention. But the zone has been so subdued, it even has Boston police wondering. "If you're a protester, go get some friends," Sgt. Mark Vickers told no one in particular Wednesday, as two musicians played a soulful rendition of America the Beautiful. Waiting his turn in the "Jesus Christ Is Coming" placard, Ruben Israel fancies himself a protest expert. Israel figures he has preached at more than 100 spectacles the past 25 years, from Super Bowls to Timothy McVeigh's execution. "This convention is not even a bleep as far as real protest goes. People are timid, they're afraid to stand up, and that's from a God-and-country man."
