The building was silent except for the finishing noises: clanging metal, popping balloons, muffled voices. But Gina Payne Scott could still hear the music, a refrain in her head, and she wanted everyone else to listen for their own song. "Where's the consciousness, where's the consciousness?" she said. Most delegates to the Democratic National Convention were long gone, but Scott lingered. She danced barefoot on a folding chair where more than an hour before, delegates from New Mexico watched John Kerry accept his party's nomination for president. During the speech, the New Jersey woman was seated up near the roof of the FleetCenter, screaming so loudly that fellow Democrats thought her odd. "Hey, I'm from privilege, too. But I'm passionate about helping people, and I don't mind showing it. . . . Is this convention over for you, did it end when John Kerry left the stage?" she asked a stranger. "It's not over for me, I hear the music, and I'm dancing.
