EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Andriy Shevchenko deflected in a free kick in the 90th minute and AC Milan beat Manchester United 9-8 on penalties after a 1-1 tie Saturday before 74,511 at Giants Stadium.

The late equalizer frustrated United, which played Bayern Munich to a scoreless tie on July 25 in Chicago, a game Bayern won 4-2 on penalties, and lost 2-1 Wednesday to Celtic in Philadelphia. The English FA Cup champion didn't win in its three-game U.S. tour.

The match drew about 4,500 fewer than United's appearance last year, when it played Juventus. United averaged 62,682 for its three games, down from the 67,885 it attracted lasted year.

MLS: The MetroStars' Armado Guevara, the league's leading scorer, had two goals to carry the East past the West 3-2 in the All-Star Game at Washington. Freddy Adu, the 15-year-old rookie for D.C. United, played in the second half, but none of his shots came close to getting past Los Angeles goaltender Kevin Hartman.

TENNIS: Clijsters out of U.S. Open

Despite a wrist injury that is healing well, No. 2-ranked Kim Clijsters will not be ready to play at the U.S. Open next month. She is recovering from last month's surgery to remove a cyst from her left wrist.

ACURA CLASSIC: Lindsay Davenport overcame a jammed right knee to beat Elena Dementieva 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals in Carlsbad, Calif. Davenport plays for her third title in as many weeks today, giving her a chance to equal her California slam of 1998, when she won at Stanford, Los Angeles and Carlsbad leading up to her first Grand Slam title at the U.S. Open.

MASTERS CANADA: Andy Roddick advanced to the final in Toronto with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Nicolas Kiefer, setting up a rematch of his Wimbledon final against Roger Federer, who extended his unbeaten streak to 22 matches with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Thomas Johansson.

HOCKEY: Forsberg in World Cup

Eight weeks after stomach surgery, former NHL MVP Peter Forsberg said he has been cleared to play for Sweden in this month's World Cup. "I've seen my doctors ... and they said I could start working out at 100 percent," the Avalanche forward told Swedish newspaper Expressen.

DUCKS: Forward Rob Niedermayer agreed to terms on a one-year contract.

KINGS: Forward Sean Avery agreed to a two-year contract extension. He led Los Angeles - and the NHL - with 261 penalty minutes last season.

PENGUINS: Right wing Aleksey Morozov will play with Ak Sars Kazan of the Russian Super League this season. The team's second-leading scorer last season grew impatient with the lack of a contract offer.

SABRES: Center Tim Connolly accepted a one-year, $1.36-million qualifying offer. The team also reached deals with backup goaltender Mika Noronen and defenseman Rory Fitzpatrick.

ET CETERA

HORSES: Jockey Edgar Prado won two stakes races at Saratoga Springs, N.Y., riding Society Selection to victory in the $250,000 Grade I Test Stakes and Wonder Again in the $500,000 Grade I Diana Stakes.

SWIMMING: Rachael Burke has begun serving a provisional suspension after testing positive for a banned substance, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency said Friday.

WNBA: Tina Thompson had 31 points and 10 rebounds to lead host Houston past Indiana 62-54. Becky Hammon scored 24 for host New York in an 80-66 win over Connecticut. Los Angeles won its fifth straight game, 79-67 over host San Antonio.
