ARLINGTON, Texas - Barry Zito continued his mastery of the Rangers in Arlington and the Athletics moved back into first place in the West with a 9-4 victory. Zito (7-7) improved to 8-0 in 10 career road starts against Texas, allowing four runs and five hits in 52/3 innings. He struck out four and walked five for the A's, who have won seven of the last eight. Erubiel Durazo went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs, and Damian Miller also had two hits for the A's, who moved past Texas again a day after being knocked out of first.
Brian Jordan and Rod Barajas homered for the Rangers, who have lost six of the last eight.
Zito had been the subject of trade rumors, and said it was a relief that he was still with the team after the deadline.
"I knew it could happen so I was prepared, but I didn't give it more thought than I should have," Zito said. "I'm going to go out every five days and do my best no matter who I'm pitching for. But it's good that it's over."
Zito may have one of his rotation mates back soon. Tim Hudson allowed two earned runs and two hits in three innings for Triple-A Sacramento in a rehab start. On the disabled list since June 27 because of a strained left oblique muscle, Hudson is expected to start Thursday against the Yankees.
"My hip felt good," he said. "My command was a little shaky, but it's been a while since a real hitter has been in there. Any time you've been out like that, you're command is going to be off."
TWINS 5, RED SOX 4: Jacque Jones hit a tiebreaking home run in the eighth for host Minnesota. Jones hit his 17th homer off Alan Embree (2-2) with one out after Michael Cuddyer tied it with a homer off Derek Lowe in the seventh. Juan Rincon (9-3) got two outs in the eighth, and Joe Nathan pitched a scoreless ninth for his 29th save in 30 opportunities, as the Twins won for the 10th time in 12 games. Johnny Damon had two hits and two RBIs, and Mark Bellhorn homered for the Red Sox.
ANGELS 9, MARINERS 8 (11): Former Ray Jose Guillen hit a two-run homer in the 11th for host Anaheim. Curtis Pride, who took over in the outfield for an injured Vladimir Guerrero, led off the 11th with a single against Eddie Guardado (2-2). Guillen drove an 0-and-1 pitch into the leftfield bullpen for his 20th homer and career-high fifth hit and was mobbed by his teammates as he crossed home plate. Brendan Donnelly (3-2) allowed two hits in two innings and got the win despite giving up a run-scoring single to Bret Boone that tied it in the top of the 11th.
ROYALS 10, INDIANS 3: Matt Stairs hit a three-run double as host Kansas City ended an eight-game losing streak. Mike Sweeney and Desi Relaford homered for Kansas City, and Stairs matched a career high with his third triple of the season. David DeJesus and Ken Harvey had three hits each for the Royals, and Harvey and Sweeney drove in two runs apiece. Royals second baseman Tony Graffanino left the game in the seventh because of tightness in his left calf. He was replaced by Wilton Guerrero.
TIGERS 3, WHITE SOX 2 (10): Cliff Politte walked Carlos Guillen to force in the winning run in the 10th, as host Detroit extended Chicago's losing streak to seven. Alex Sanchez started the rally with a one-out single off Politte. Omar Infante singled, with the ball glancing off the glove of shortstop Jose Valentin. Sanchez went to third and Infante moved to second. Ivan Rodriguez was walked intentionally. Dmitri Young made a bid for the winning hit, but first baseman Paul Konerko made a diving catch of his liner. Guillen followed by walking.
