DALLAS - A high school football player died and two other teammates were hospitalized after the first practice of the season, but the cause of death was not immediately clear, officials said Tuesday.

Eric Brown, 17, finished practice around noon Monday and went home, where he fell ill, said Troy Mathieu, spokesman for the Dallas Independent School District.

The 5-foot-11, 275-pound center for Carter High left practice with several other players and they stopped for food before going home, Mathieu said.

"He didn't do anything in practice that would've warranted concern," Mathieu said.

The medical examiner's office is waiting for test results before determining a cause of death.

An ambulance was called for another player immediately after practice, Mathieu said, and a third later went to the hospital.
