Wellswood wins twice to take title

TOWN 'N COUNTRY - The rival between Wellswood and Town 'N Country featured two more chapters on Tuesday, but both went poorly for the hosts. Having defeated Wellswood once in the double-elimination tournament, Town 'N Country needed just to win one of two games.

Instead, Wellswood pounded out 15-7 and 16-3 victories to win the South Zone championship and a berth in the Bronco division World Series, which starts Friday in Monterey, Calif. A year ago, Wellswood was unable to sweep a doubleheader from Tamiami in the South Zone final.

James Ramsay did a little of everything for Wellswood. He started Game 1, delivering a two-run home run in the second inning. Zack Payne had a two-run homer in the first and Wellswood was cruising with a 7-2 lead after Ronald Cabrera jumped on a Kevin Riley pitch in the top of the third for a two-run shot beyond the leftfield fence and into the parking lot.

Randy Purdy's sacrifice fly cut the margin to 7-4 before Wellswood exploded for eight runs in the fourth, including Ramsay's three-run homer.

Justin Frost homered for Town 'N Country.

Ramsay and Payne scored on a two-out error in the first in the second game and Snyder added a two-out RBI single.

In the top of the second, Wellswood scored when Cabrera was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Town 'N Country intentionally walked Payne with the bases loaded and one out, but Eric Arce foiled the plans with a two-out grand slam to push his team ahead 8-0.

Ramsay capped his day with a twisting catch to end the bottom of third, taking a step in before leaping toward the fence in center for an over-the-shoulder grab.
