Some rhyme and reason to politics' silly season
By HOWARD TROXLER
Published August 5, 2004
A is for apple,
and back-to-school days,
arriving too early
cutting short summer's laze.
B is for Betty,
Castor running for Senate,
Here's a prediction,
Name ID will win it.
C is for council
And protest zones zapped
It was Rick Baker's doing
But they took the rap.
D is for Deutsch,
If you'll pardon a simile
He's overly focused
On a list done by Emily.
E is for Edwards,
He gives a fine speech
But can he bring Reagan Democrats
Back within reach?
F is for Fox,
Where facts don't much matter,
Them Frenchies are weenies,
And the Democrats, sadder.
G is for Glenda,
Once a competent mayor,
Cut blacks, kept Hispanics,
Now a partisan player.
H is for Halliburton,
And Dick Cheney too,
And if you don't like it,
He'll tell you: @#&* you!
I is for Iorio,
Cleaning up Greco's books,
Her only fault's thinking
Every old hand's a crook.
J is for Jerry,
Who runs DCF,
Best buddy to vendors,
And lobbyists with heft.
K is for Kerry,
His stands are a puzzle,
Fills his stage with old soldiers,
Keeps the left wing quite muzzled.
L is for Legislature,
Its districts so broken,
They'll win and then claim:
"The people have spoken."
M is for Martinez,
and McCollum too,
Here's Mel's total platform:
"What would W. do?"
N is for Naimoli,
A street cop assailed he,
If he'd just beef up his payroll,
He could yell at me daily.
O is for orange,
The threat level today,
Or maybe that's yellow,
What does Karl Rove say?
P is for politics,
And its grim modern face:
My side is quite perfect
And yours a disgrace.
R is for Rays,
And their skipper most cranky,
They can hang with all comers
Except Red Sox and Yankees.
S is for same-sex amendment,
The president's wish, true
With the polls running even,
He needs a wedge issue.
T is for touch screen,
alleged to have quirks,
but if the Dems win it,
they'll claim the things worked.
U is for unwelcome
That's what you'll be when
In City Hall, Tampa,
You don't obey their religion.
W is for Web,
Where much nonsense spam flies,
Conspiracy e-mails,
Wives unsatisfied.
And now this page ends,
Without V, X, Y, Z,
For it hardly seems worth it
To ask, "See TROXLER, Page 3."
