Offense deserts Georgia vs. Alabama

GULFPORT - Alabama completed pool play at the Southeast Region Tournament, defeating Georgia 2-1 on Wednesday.

Georgia escaped a poor offensive performance earlier in the tournament against Tennessee, but the lack of production caught up with the team from Columbus Northern.

"We didn't bring our bats again," coach Dusty Perdue said. "They probably knew that they didn't have to win and it cost us."

Georgia took the lead in the third on Johnny Carter's home run to leftfield. The homer was Georgia's fourth of the tournament.

With the bases loaded in the fifth, Sam Harbuck drew a walk to force in Jordan Patterson for Alabama's first run. The run was the first Georgia had allowed during the tournament and only the second in 25 innings.

Alabama scored again in the sixth when Chad Reeves led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a pass ball. Reeves was replaced by Ben Givens, who advanced to third on a single by Alex Summers. A groundball to third by Hunter Haynes allowed Givens to score.

Starter Thomas Northcutt went the distance for Alabama, striking out six and allowing four hits. Georgia starter Matt Rossi went five and allowed six hits with five strikeouts.

Georgia maintained the top seed for today's 4 p.m. semifinal against Virginia. McLendon Hill likely will start for Georgia against Andrew Martin. Both won their starts Sunday.

Virginia pitchers have allowed a total of 10 runs through three games, while Georgia pitchers have allowed only three in their past 27 innings. Virginia offensively is led by Tyler Lane, who has two home runs, but the team is hitting .267 with 20 hits.
