The 19th hole

Norman's record at No. 1 to end

Greg Norman's record for weeks at No. 1 in the World Golf Ranking ends Sunday when Tiger Woods will be in the top spot for the 332nd straight week. Woods' streak dates to Aug. 15, 1999. Norman, who turns 50 in February, last held the No. 1 position in January 1998. His reign began in September 1986, the year he won the British Open but also led the other three major championships heading into the final round. The Shark had 11 separate stints at No. 1 over 12 years, with the longest being 96 weeks.

NO ROOM IN MOTOWN: It usually works the other way, with football being king. But when the Ryder Cup goes to the Detroit suburb of Bloomfield Hills next month, the golf event will be king. So much so that the NFL's Houston Texans, scheduled to play the Detroit Lions on Ryder Cup Sunday, Sept. 19, had difficulty finding a place to stay. The Texans were nearly forced to flee to Toledo, 60 miles away, until a Lions official finally found enough space near the Detroit airport.

CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?

When Karen Stupples won the Women's British Open on Sunday, she became just the third British player to win a major championship on the LPGA Tour. And all three are from England. Stupples, who is from Dover and played college golf at Florida State, joined Laura Davies and Alison Nicholas. Davies, who was born in Coventry, was the first British player to win a women's major when she captured the 1987 U.S. Women's Open. She has four majors overall. Nicholas, who is from Birmingham, won the 1997 U.S. Women's Open.

QUOTABLE

"The more they made noise, the more calm I became." - VIJAY SINGH, who played alongside huge crowd favorite John Daly during the final round of the Buick Open and defeated him by a stroke

STAT OF THE WEEK

Daly is No. 1 in the PGA Tour's all-around statistical category, which combines eight key stats. He is third in driving distance and third in putting.
