For two weeks this summer, 30 young photographers - some of whom had never taken pictures before - combed the Midtown section of St. Petersburg with cameras as part a summer camp sponsored by the American Society of Newspaper Editors and the Pinellas County School Board.

The elementary and middle school students worked with professionals to capture both the area's history (the Manhattan Casino, the Greenwood Cemetery) and its present (the new Jordan Park and Johnnie Ruth Clarke Health Center).

An exhibition of 100 of their photographs is at the Florida International Museum, 100 Second St. N, St. Petersburg, through Sept. 12. Included in the exhibit is this picture of Buddy's Barber Shop on 22nd Street S by Joseph Horning, 12, a seventh-grader at John Hopkins Middle School.

A free reception honoring the photographers will be held at the museum from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 13. 727 822-3693 or www.floridamuseum.org
