How about seat belts, air on all our buses?

Published August 5, 2004

Editor: Before I cast my vote for superintendent of Pasco County schools, I would like to ask the candidates, Heather Fiorentino, Chuck Rushe, Alice Delgardo and James Griffin, a question: What do you think about air-conditioning school buses and installing seat belts on all school buses?

These are important safety issues that affect every student riding a school bus.

Tree trimmers left pile of debris in front yard

Editor: I am writing in regard to the environmental services that have a contract with Progress Energy. They came out to my property over two weeks ago and for some reason trimmed some trees that are in my back yard that were interfering with the power lines.

I came home and found the trees in my front yard. Not knowing who trimmed them or where they were from, I had to ask neighbors! No note - nothing. My problem is that I have been given the run-around, and no one seems to care about the bulk of debris that is a major eyesore and a breeding ground for mosquitoes within feet of my front door.

I have given these people the benefit of the doubt and have gotten nothing but "we will be there in three to five business days." They never came - in 16 days so far. I shouldn't have to deal with this mess, and I believe if I didn't live in a low-income area, and I was in a beautiful house with a beautiful yard, it would have been taken the same day it was cut. I feel like I am being taken advantage of because I am not a homeowner and I am living on a small income. I don't think it's fair for me or my neighbors.

Justice should be equal for all public officials

Editor: A retired state trooper from New Jersey related a story in the Pasco Times in which he was proud of a judge who many years ago sentenced a police officer to one year in jail for stealing 5 gallons of gas.

The trooper agreed with the comments made by the judge at sentencing.

The judge informed the defendant that as a police officer he was expected to be held to a higher standard than the average citizen and, therefore, he will serve the maximum sentence allowed.

I feel the officer in question should suffer the "appropriate" punishment, but to hold police officers only to higher standards and not give the maximum punishment to other public officials and public figures is not the way that justice should be served.

Entertainment coverage needs improvement

Editor: I always look forward to the arts and entertainment column in the Pasco Times to find out exactly what new theater or special events are happening in the area.

Now every time I look at Barbara Fredricksen's column, I get to read about her personal life, her car, her kids, her cat, her figs, her plants. . . . The list goes on.

Why don't you give her a new column for her personal life and get a real theater critic who writes about arts and entertainment? There are so many exciting and interesting events in this area that they can inform the public about in this column.

Figs are not entertaining.
