Mets debut all Wright

MILWAUKEE - David Wright gave Victor Zambrano plenty of support in his first Mets start.

Wright homered and drove in six, helping the former Devil Rays ace win his Mets debut Thursday 11-6 over the Brewers.

"Some guys go a career without (six RBIs)," Mets manager Art Howe said. "He was Johnny on the spot."

Wright, who entered with four career RBIs, hit a three-run homer in the first inning and a three-run double in the fourth as New York completed a three-game sweep. The third baseman, considered one of baseball's best prospects, finished one short of the team rookie record for RBIs set by Jeromy Burnitz on Aug. 5, 1993, against Montreal.

The Mets sent prized pitching prospect Scott Kazmir to Tampa Bay on July 30 in a trade for Zambrano, who was 9-7 with the Devil Rays and 0-3 in his past four starts.

The right-hander won for the third time on the road despite allowing six runs, four earned, and eight hits in 51/3 innings. He struck out seven and walked three in his first win since July 3 at Florida.

"He was very solid," Howe said. "Once he got through the first inning, he was in command."

Pedro Feliciano, Ricky Bottalico and John Franco combined for 32/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Milwaukee starter Victor Santos pitched 32/3 innings. The right-hander, who lost his fourth start in a row, gave up nine runs, six earned, and six hits.

"He wasn't very good," Milwaukee manager Ned Yost said. "Those other three games, we didn't score runs for him."

It didn't matter who was pitching to Wright, who was called up from Triple-A Norfolk on July 21.

After Mike Cameron's two-run double in the first, Wright hit a long three-run homer, his third of the season. Vance Wilson followed with homer to give New York a 6-0 lead.

"It was a good at-bat," Wright said. "I was down in the count and battled. It was a breaking ball. I relaxed and it felt good."

In the fourth, Richard Hidalgo hit a run-scoring single to chase Santos. Two batters later, Wright's three-run double gave New York a 10-3 lead.

Wright also doubled in the sixth and scored on Wilson's single.
